What could be more delightful than celebrating this month with the sweet aroma of a freshly baked Portuguese Pastel de Nata? October brings us to Lisbon and the history of the Pastel de Nata. At Ola Bakery & Pastries Hamilton, we celebrate a rich history and love for the traditional Portuguese pastry, Pastel de Natas. This beloved pastry dates back to before the 18th century and was created by the monks at the Jeronimos Monastery in the Parish of Santa Maria de Belem in Lisbon.
Convents and Monastery used large quantities of egg whites to starch their clothes. Nothing went to waste, they used the yolks to make cakes and pastries. It's a dessert that is close to our hearts and we take pride in providing our customers with the authentic taste of this pastry.
Did you know that after the revolution of 1820, the monasteries and convents faced closures?
The monks found a way to bring in revenue by selling Pastel de Natas. In 1834, when the monastery closed, the recipe was sold to the refinery, securing its place in Portuguese history and culture.
Today, this pastry has become popular all over the world with its crispy flaky shell and creamy custard filling with a hint of cinnamon.
Join us this month as we celebrate our 1st anniversary, and immerse yourself in the rich Portuguese history that has brought our beloved Pastel de Natas - Portuguese Custart tarts to our bakery.
